Chaitra Navratri is a significant Hindu
festival dedicated to worshipping the nine forms of Goddess Durga, known as
Shakti — the divine feminine energy. The word "Navratri" means
"nine nights," during which devotees honor the powerful
manifestations of Shakti, including Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta,
Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.
This festival marks the beginning of the
Hindu New Year according to the lunar calendar and occurs during the bright
half of the Chaitra month (March-April). It is a time of devotion,
self-reflection, and spiritual growth, culminating with the celebration of Ram
Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama.
●
Preparation: Take a bath early in the morning
and wear clean, new clothes.
●
Kalash Sthapana: Fill a kalash (sacred pot)
with water, adorn it with mango leaves, and tie a moli (sacred thread) around
it.
●
Goddess Idol: Place an image or idol of
Goddess Durga in your puja area. Offer roli (vermilion), chawal (rice grains),
flowers, kumkum, and belpatra (sacred leaves).
●
Aarti and Mantra: Light a diya (lamp) with
ghee, offer incense, and perform aarti while chanting Durga Saptashati or the
mantra:
“Ya
Devi Sarva bhuteshu Matri rupena samsthita
Ya Devi sarva bhuteshu Shakti rupena
samsthita
Ya Devi sarva bhuteshu Shanti rupena
samsthita
Namestasyai Namestasyai Namestasyai
Namoh Namah”
Chaitra Navratri is more than a religious
observance — it is a time for personal growth, spiritual awakening, and seeking
divine blessings for strength, wisdom, and prosperity. Worshipping the various
forms of Shakti is believed to bring peace, remove negativity, and protect from
hardships.
